Scarsi ed incompleti sono i dati presenti nella letteratura nazionale ed internazionale riguardo l’etiologia, i sintomi e segni che caratterizzano le adolescenti affette dalla Sindrome da Policistosi Ovarica (PCOS). Lo studio in questione è inteso a a colmare, almeno in parte, queste lacune.
Materiali e Metodi: Per realizzare lo scopo prefisso è stato chiesto a 250 pazienti affette da PCOS, reclutate presso il nostro ambulatorio, di 
riempire un questionario concernente l’insorgenza della pubertà (età del menarca, pubarca e telarca) ed altri dati ad essa correlati. Questi sono poi stati confrontati con quelli relativi alla popolazione di “controllo”.

Questi sono poi stati confrontati con quelli relativi alla popolazione di “controllo”.Il principale criterio di inclusione delle pazienti nel gruppo dei casi è stato l’evidenza clinica e ormonale di iperandrogenismo ed anovulazione, non correlata a iperandrogenemia non policistosica. Le pazienti che costituivano la popolazione di controllo non erano affette da anovulazione, irsutismo, iperandrogenismo, alterazioni del ciclo, sterilità..
Risultati: In considerazione delle risposte al questionario distribuito ad entrambi i gruppi in studio, i dati rilevanti esitavano in tal modo: il menarca era insorto all’età di 10,4 ± 1,9 anni nel gruppo PCOS vs. il 12,4 ± 1,5 anni nel secondo; le pazienti con PCOS riferivano il telarca in media all’età di 9,8 ± 1,5 anni mentre era iniziato in media a 11 ± 1,9 anni nel gruppo controllo; il pubarca si era presentato nel 18% del gruppo PCOS già prima dei 7,8 anni di età, mentre all’interno popolazione di controllo in nessuna paziente la crescita dei peli pubici era avvenuta così precocemente; i cicli mestruali divennero regolari mediamente all’età di 15,8 anni vs. 13,2 anni. L’obesità era presente sin da giovane età nel 30% del gruppo PCOS vs. il 5% all’interno del gruppo controllo; la sonnolenza post-prandiale colpiva circa il 50% delle donne PCOS e solo il 10% all’interno del secondo gruppo.

Conclusioni: menarca e telarca insorgono più precocemente nelle pazienti PCOS, in queste addirittura c’è una incidenza non trascurabile di pubarca in giovanissima età. Questi eventi sono da riportarsi con elevata probabilità all’iperandrogenismo ed all’elevato indice di massa corporea (BMI) caratteristico della Sindrome in esame.
Infine non trascurabile è l’ipotesi che la modalità differente nell’insorgenza della pubertà tra i due gruppi considerati sia strettamente correlata alla aumentata frequenza di insulino-resistenza nelle pazienti-PCOS.
